Arts After School...Sculpture. We have been working on wire animal sculptures all week. It was a great introduction for me to the program and kids. They are so excited to be at the center and working on art.

The colorful elephant is one of my favorite projects. Each one is so different even though we do the drawing as a class. The students follow me as I draw the elephant on the board, they draw the elephant line by line with a yellow crayon. It is very hard to see until you add the watercolor. These elephants were created by first and second graders.
Side note: I had a 2nd grader tell me that she was so honored to meet "a REAL artist" and could she have my autograph. It has been a good first week. These are my studio spaces in my apartment. It is on the 3rd floor with lots of light. It was originally two apartments but the center took down a wall and made it into one big apartment. I love it. It feels good to be working and thinking art 24/7.
The adventure has begun. For those of you that didn't know...I am finally using my art and degrees in my job. I am the Resident Artist for the Arts Center in Jamestown, ND (jamestownarts.com). This a very exciting new chapter. My day is filled with teaching two classes in the local elementary schools, some personal studio time, and an after school art program for 3rd-5th grade. This week started with a bang...in the schools I am teaching the Elements of Art. Arts After School started with Sculpture. Both have been a great refresher for me as an artist and teacher. Monday night I was also introduced to Artful Happy Hour. That's right, wine (or beer) and Art. It was the start up event for the fall...Next month I am teaching acrylic painting...come join us if you are in the area. It should be a good time! |
